"In the Hole!"

Why is there some yayhoo on every single tee at every single golf championship (at least in the States) that yells "In the hole!" at every single fucking tee shot? You know, bud, when Vijay Singh tees off on a 575 yard dogleg right par 5, it AIN'T going in the hole...

  • It's sort of a cargo cult for a tag line. "In the hole!" gets used in unconnected, thus inappropriate, contexts much as "Freebird!" does -- that is to say, out of ignorance, irony or (yes) both.

  • It beats "You 'da man," or "Get 'er done."

Or even "Superman" which probably got ONE fan thrown out.

  • If I never hear "Git-R-Dun" again I'll be a happy camper. And yeah, the ill-timed "Superman" shout was clearly the product of too much time in the hospitality tents!

  • I apologize for the English major coming out and not being able to spell, (Oh!Dear!God!) "Git-R-Dun" correctly. Yikes. I'm hyperventilating as I write this.

Anyway, so you know Bundle #1 got married a few weeks ago. The young man was from King, NC. Google "redneck" and you get the King Chamber of Commerce.

So, in the midst of the home stretch, two days before the wedding, when I'd had quite enough, I announced to B1, "Not to put any pressure on you my dear, but if Daddy-in-law-to-be utters 'Git-R-Dun' ONE TIME this weekend, I will have to kill him." You've got to know it was pretty intense to have pushed me, a Quaker and pacifist to threaten violence.

By the way, ever notice the "FIST" in pacifist?
